A Redditor who lives in Sanaa, the capital of Yemen, claims to be using cryptocurrency to buy food packages for families who cannot access supplies due to an ongoing civil war.
According to a Sept. 23 Reddit post by user Yemenvoice, the Yemeni national raised around $ 12,000 in cryptocurrency donations that will be used to fight famine in the Middle Eastern nation. He claims to have been in charge of supplying 15 families with flour, rice, vegetable oil and beans and they hope to reach 30 more in the near future.

“I tried very hard to help my people by searching in any way possible,” Yemenvoice said. “I tried to launch donation campaigns online, but unfortunately all online donation platforms are not compatible with Yemen. So I thought about using cryptocurrency as an alternative method and it was actually much easier and more effective.” .
Yemen’s civil war began in 2014, followed by a Saudi-led coalition of forces that responded to a request for help from the ousted president, Abd-Rabbuh Mansur Hadi. The country has been blocked by air, land and sea since March 2015, resulting in millions of Yemenis needing basic necessities.
